§Conversion of Umar Ibn Al-Khattab
The Muslims that moved to Abyssinia were now safe under the
protection of the kind Christian King Negus.
In Makkah however things were getting worse.
The leaders that hated Islam the most were Abu Lahab, Abu Jahl and Umar Ibn Al-Khatab. Umar hated the new
religion so much he finally decided to kill Muhammad (sw) to end Islam.
He took his sword and headed for the Prophet’s house. He met a man
called Nuaym on his way, and Nuaym told Umar his sister had become Muslim. Umar became angry.
So he went to his sisters house instead where he heard her and her husband reading a part of the Qur’an. He
asked them what they were reading but
they did not tell him.
He was extremely angry and demanded them to tell him what they were
reading, but they did not. So Umar got up to hit his brother in law and
accidently hit his sister instead and she started to bleed.
Then she exclaimed, ‘Yes we are Muslim and we
believe in God and his Messenger!’
Umar was shocked
from seeing the blood on his sister as well as finding out she was Muslim.
He asked if he could
see what they were reading. His sister told him to do ‘Wudhu’ first, wash himself as the words of Allah are pure and he was
unclean.
He began to read
Surah Taha where God speaks about the Quran being sent down as a
warning and not as
distress. And that it is a revelation from God.
It was like Allah
was talking to Umar directly as the Quran was giving him stress.
Umar was deeply moved by the words, and decided to become a Muslim.
He again headed for the Prophet’s house.
This time not to kill him, but be his follower.
The other Sahabah- companions were worried as Umar still had his sword with him. But
the Prophet (sw) welcomed him in and started saying ‘God is great’ ‘Allahu-Akbar!’
Umar was a brave and powerful man, he was passionate in whatever he
did. And as a new Muslim he and Abu Hamzah protected the Prophet (sw) and the rest of the Muslims.
Umar ibn Al-Khatab is one of the best Sahaba and became one of
the leaders of the Muslims ‘Khalifa’ later on. He was
also promised Heaven ‘Jannah’ in his lifetime.
